OU's Lean Institute History The University of Oklahoma Outreach, College of Continuing Education was chosen by the Air Force in 2004 to design, develop and implement the OU Lean Institute as part of a major employee transformation program at the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center (OCALC). OCALC, located on Tinker Air Force Base, provides management, logistics support and repair and maintenance for a wide range of weapons systems. As OCALC works with some of the most sophisticated equipment in the world, its business practices needed to be advanced. Lean Institute at Tinker Air Force Base The Lean Institute at Tinker Air Force Base began expanding its course offerings and services in 2005 to include the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, adding an additional training program with the United States Postal Service in 2007. In late 2007 the OU Lean Institute decided to begin providing public course offerings to interested participants from any local-area business, non-profit organization, or governmental institution. In early 2008 the Lean Institute at Tinker Air Force Base modified its name to the OU Lean Institute at the University of Oklahoma to reflect its broadening customer base. As part of this expansion, the OU Lean Institute at OU has begun working closely with other departments within the OU community, particularly in leading rapid improvement events as well as identifying and administering process improvement projects on campus. With a long history spanning back to 1913, Outreach annually offers some 2,000 courses and activities to more than 200,000 nontraditional learners in Oklahoma and in locations all over the world. University Outreach extends the educational resources of University of Oklahoma in locations throughout Oklahoma and around the world. Located on the Norman campus, University Outreach’s Oklahoma Center for Continuing Education is the home of the College of Continuing Education and the College of Liberal Studies. outreach.ou.edu
